Solution: Starting with version 5.0, Microsoft included an UNDELETE command with DOS. You can use this command to retrieve your file. Other companies also offer file recovery products to help with this task.
Problem: You get some message saying "Sector error..." and certain files cannot be accessed.
Solution: The hard drive may have a bad sector where that information is stored, or the file is improperly identified in the drives storage map. The CHKDSK command can do some rudimentary checks of the disk's integrity. It is highly recommended that you look at a more sophisticated disk diagnostic tool to analyze the disk.
Problem: The hard disk won't start the system up.
Solution: It's possible that the hard drives CONFIG.SYS file has been corrupted. This will crash the system as it boots. To bypass this, use a bootable system disk to start the system up, then correct the CONFIG.SYS.
Solution: The CMOS settings may have been corrupted causing the drive to not be recognized. You will need to use the CMOS setup program to properly identify the drive. See you computer and hard drive's user manuals for information.
